Yesterday we talked about our body’s and today I’d like to talk to you about your soul. We are made up of Body, Soul and Spirit. Your Spirit is the part of you that comes alive upon receiving Christ as your savior. It is the part of you that communes with the Holy Spirit. We can talk about that next time. Today is Soul Day!
Your Soul is your Mind, Will and Emotions. What you think, what you choose and how you feel. This is really where most of your worldly battles take place. The apostle Paul said “For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not.” (Romans 7:18) Your spirit is holy and wants to do what is right but your soul(mind, will, emotions) doesn’t naturally lean that way. Everyone deals with this, don’t think you are alone. We want to obey God, but we often fail because our mind, will and emotions have been skewed from the beginning of time to gratify the desires of our flesh. This is where your CHOICE comes into play. You have to CHOOSE on a daily, moment to moment basis to bring your SOUL under authority of your spirit.
Romans 7:22-23 message translation says, “I truly delight in God’s commands, but it’s pretty obvious that not all of me joins in that delight. Parts of me covertly rebel, and just when I least expect it, they take charge.”
Ugh…doesn’t that just ring so true? Just when we least expect it our soul rears its ugly head and there we are in sin again. BUT WAIT, there is hope. You just need a savior, that is all, we all fall short. Our souls all get the best of us at times, despite our good intentions. Gregory Dickow put it this way…”We walk by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 4:7 says you can serve God, now, even when you feel like you fall short. Believe what God says about you, and don’t bow down to what your soul(mind, will, emotions) and the devil try to tell you about your weaknesses, contradictions and mistakes.”
So, my friends, set your mind on Christ alone and be transformed by the renewing of your minds. Cut yourself some slack and know that it is those very places you fall short that Jesus died for. Those very places that are covered by the blood of Jesus and made whole in Christ! Don’t give up doing good, but keep up the fight until the very end. If you stumble, stand up, brush yourself off and stand confident in the grace and mercy that has been extended to you!
Recognize that you are in a battle between your spirit and your soul. Stop giving into the lie that you are not good and that your body and soul are winning the battle. Your soul can be controlled by your spirit. Your spirit wants to obey God and you must demand that your soul(mind, will, emotions) submit to your spirit. The things that are in you that don’t want to submit to God is not the real you, you are more than a conqueror through Jesus Christ and made in the image of God! Live in that reality!
